The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George was extensively restored and extended during the Victorian era, and then again after severe bomb damage during the 1940 Manchester ‘Blitz’, giving the cathedral a deceptively modern appearance. It actually dates back to the Saxon era, and during 19th-century renovation work the Angel Stone was found within one of the original 13th-century walls of the cathedral. The carving is believed to date back to around AD 700 when Manchester’s first church was built.
